Riverside STEM Academy High School - Sports

PROCEDURES FOR STUDENTS WISHING TO PARTICIPATE IN ATHLETICS:

  1. Go to your home/assigned high school’s Sports webpage or call for information regarding sport teams, coaches, try-outs, practices, deadlines, and requirements to participate.
  2. Complete the requirements to try out for your sport.
  3. Once you have confirmation you are on a team, visit your home/assigned high school’s attendance office and request “concurrent enrollment”. CIF rules require that a student be enrolled in one class at the school where they are participating on a team. (Typically, this is a Sports PE class).
  4. This home/assigned high school will need to complete concurrent enrollment AND place you in a class.   
  5. Notify the office (Mrs. Vargas and Mrs. Erickson) at Riverside STEM Academy that you are planning to play on a sports team, and they will explain the process for signing out to leave early for practices and games. 
  6. They will notify the counselor, Ms. Izquieta, who will make the necessary schedule changes to your schedule. Changes cannot be completed at Riverside STEM Academy until the concurrent enrollment at the home/assigned high school has been activated and Sports PE is added to your class schedule by the RUSD high school.

Please note the following key information:

  • Being enrolled in a 6th period sports PE class at your home/assigned high school, including the travel time required, will result in your 6th period class needing to be dropped at STEM. In order to complete that process, you need to be physically enrolled at the sports school, which can take a few days to a few weeks depending on several factors.  You must continue to attend classes here at STEM until this process is complete. 
  • Some sports teams meet during “0” period.  Whether you are leaving STEM after 5th period or arriving for 1st period from your sports school, you must not miss any part of your class here at STEM (not leave early from 5th period or arrive late to 1st period). You will need to work out the details with your coach, and they must agree that you might need to arrive a few minutes late or leave a few minutes early, depending on their schedule.
  • Depending on your current grade level, your 6th period at STEM is typically a required course and will need to be completed through alternative means. Ultimately, the STEM high school counselor, Ms. Izqueta, will need to make the changes to your schedule. Changes cannot be completed at Riverside STEM Academy until the concurrent enrollment into a class at the home/assigned high school has been activated and Sports PE is added to your class schedule by the RUSD high school.
  • Transportation to the sports school is to be provided by the parent.
