STEM HS Sports FAQs

If you live within RUSD boundaries, you would play at your home high school. Your home high school is determined by the address we have in our student information system. If you live OUTSIDE of RUSD boundaries, an RUSD Comprehensive High School is randomly selected for you by Pupil Services.

Once you know what school you are assigned to, you will need to contact the Athletic department of that school to find out the name and contact information of the head coach of the sport(s) you are interested in. You may email the secretary to the Athletic director, and they can usually give you more detailed information regarding coaches, tryouts, summer practices, etc.

You will need to make the coach aware that you are enrolled at STEM and will need to complete “Concurrent” enrollment at your home high school. Depending on the sports team, the coach may want you to be enrolled in their “Sport PE” class, which is typically the last period (per. 6) of the day. Some Sports teams meet “0” period or 7th period. You and your parent will need to speak to the attendance office of your home/assigned high school and ask to be CONCURRENTLY enrolled. You will most likely need the following items:

• Proof of address (that you live within their boundaries) OR verification from Pupil Services that you have been assigned to that school
• Birth certificate, immunization records.
• Confirmation from your coach that you need to be added to their Sport PE class.  

You should ask for a “Sports physical” packet at the school where you are participating - each school has its own packet which usually contains a physical release that needs to be completed by your family physician.  

You will need to notify the office (Mrs. Vargas or Mrs. Erickson) at STEM of the sports team and school in which you are participating. We will explain the process for leaving campus early for practice and/or game days. This includes checking out at the attendance office and providing the Attendance Assistant, Mrs Donjuan, the name of your coach so that the attendance office can obtain a schedule of your game days. You will also need to speak to the high school counselor, Ms. Izqueta, about dropping your PE class at STEM. This cannot be completed until we can verify through the student information system that your concurrent enrollment is active in Aeries.

It is the obligation of your parents to provide transportation when leaving school early for practice.  After the school year starts and all middle school students have been offered a bus pass, if there is space available on the bus dropping off at your home high school, it may be possible to obtain a special pass.  Please note, riding the middle school bus is a privilege, not a right. Behavior expectations must be respected.
